Things You'll Need:
- A warm climate year-round
-
Step 1
First, grab the pit (seed) from an avocado.
-
Step 2
Take a coffee can or other small empty can and fill it with water.
-
Step 3
Stick three toothpicks in the avocado seed.Place the avocado seed with the fat end in the water, and the pointed end sticking up. Stick three toothpicks in the avocado pit about half way down. The toothpicks should be stuck in the pit about halfway at a horizontal angle, so that you can place the avocado seed suspended in the coffee can.
-
Step 4
Suspend the seed in the can so that the pointed end sticks out of the water and about half of the seed is submerged.
-
Step 5
Keep the water full. It may take 2-3 weeks or longer for the seed to crack open and roots to sprout downward into the water.
-
Step 6
Once you see a decent root, about an inch long, you can place the avocado seed into a pot with soil. The part that was submerged in water should be under the soil and the rest above.
-
Step 7
Congratulations, you now have an avocado seedling. In a few months you will have a small tree.
-
Step 8
Fertilize and water as needed. Keep in the sun and never let the avocado tree freeze.
