There are many freeware downloads available for you to use in order to protect and clean your PC. You can always contribute to these distributors if you like their products but they are available for free.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet
  1. Step 1

Start with an antivirus. There are many good antivirus programs available for free. I personally use Avast but have used AVG in the past. I would suggest going to cnet.com and reading up on a few to find the one that best suits your need and is the most user friendly for you.

  2. Step 2

Find a good Malware / Adware / Spyware remover. I run 2 of these as each one seems to catch different things. Again there are many of these available for download. Do some reading and find one or two that best fits your needs.

  3. Step 3

Registry cleaner. There are less of these available for free but they are out there. CCleaner is what I personally use and it seems to do the job pretty well.

  4. Step 4

Smart browsing. There is no substitute for being intelligent about the sites you go to and the pop ups you click on. If you get a pop up and find that you cannot get out of it you always have the option of simultaneously hitting the Ctrl + Alt + Delete buttons going to Task Manager and ending the Internet Explorer task. This should close any
Internet window that you cannot get rid of.

Tips & Warnings
  • Run a manual antivirus (full scan) once every 2 weeks
  • Run the Malware/Spyware remover and the Registry cleaner once a week
