1
Decide where and when to fish for Coho salmon. The most common places for fishing are the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Coho salmon like to stay in shallow water at depths of about 20 feet that is slow-moving, which at least makes it easier to see fish and understand how plentiful they are for your fishing. The best time to fish for salmon in rivers are in the early morning and late afternoon.

2
Use proper lures that are brightly colored and medium to large sized, or use bait such as salmon eggs, crawdads, night crawlers or herring. Coho salmon swim in schools, especially in shallow water, so look for activity such as bubbles or splashing. Strong currents help attract food for Coho salmon, so fish in these areas as well offshore.

Use strong, sturdy fishing poles with large reels. Poles should be about 12 feet long, with at least 80-100 feet of line that is strong. Scoop up smaller Coho salmon with a net, and you can use a gaffing hook to haul out larger salmon. Drifting is a good way to catch Coho salmon. Cast a line upriver in shallow areas without weight on your fishing line.

Attract Coho salmon with a variety of fishing products, if desired. Besides colorful lures, you can purchase products that add smells to the water or different bait. Noises also help attract Coho salmon; bells or rattles have been known to attract them.
