How many boxes of corn meal or pouches of corn bread mix have you tossed because of weevils? .. those nasty little worm-like critters or their shed-skin skeletons? How many boxes of cereal have you deemed useless because of these creepy critters? Gross! Yucky! Or as my toddler grand children say, “eeeeeee-ewwwww”.. I am willing to bet that you have wasted tens if not hundreds of dollars worth of grain-style products because of weevils. Waste no more! Get rid of the weevils; chase them away and save your sanity with a very simple item, BAY LEAVES! No longer just a dried herb to enhance roasts of beef, soups and stews. Slip one or two leaves in your opened corn meal, corn bread mix, cereal boxes and flour. Sprinkle a few loose leaves up on your pantry shelves along the edges and in the corners.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • For 10 Sachets, you will need:
  • 10 – Whole Bay Leaves
  • 1/3 yard Tulle, color of your choice
  • 1 2/3 yard satin ribbon (1/8” wide) to match or contrast with tulle
  • Sewing Thread to match the tulle
  1. Step 1

For a little (I do mean little) hostess gift or a simple “just because” take-along-gift, make a few bay leaf sachets. Here is how: Cut the narrow matching or contrasting ribbon into ten - six inch lengths.
Cut 10 - 6 inch circles from the Tulle (use a small salad plate for a pattern or an old 45 rpm record if you have one).

  2. Step 2

Place one bay leaf in the center of a circle of tulle. Gather the edges into a “pouch”. To secure wrap a doubled piece of thread several times around the top with thread. Tie and knot the thread and clip excess.

  3. Step 3

Next, wrap one, six inch piece of ribbon around top and tie into a pretty little bow. Here is your finished Sachet or bay leaf packet. Look out weevils!

Tips & Warnings
  • Just toss one these into your canister of flour, cornmeal, cereal and any other grain-type foodstuff in your pantry that weevils love. If you want to give these tiny sachets as gifts, attach a little slip of paper or card stock with the following prose: “Believe it or not, this little sachet has a purpose! Just toss it in your canister of corn meal, flour or cereal. It will keep away weevils without leaving odor or taste. © 2009 Aunt Cat’s Kitchen” These tiny treasures take up little to no space when packed in your suitcase, purse or briefcase and are almost weightless. You can easily slip one of the little gifts into an envelope you’re mailing to Aunt Susie or Granny Millie. Your non-invasive bay leaf packets are mightier than a can of Mega-Bug Killer and certainly friendlier to the environment.
