Create a Garden Path

This is a great spring project that you can have fun with. I know there were times when I though: this area can have a path I could have people walk on or even just for me to make it to the end of the lawn.
What would make a path attractive is using some stone, or pea gravel garden path.

The lack of edging is what gives this path its rustic look. For a different look, showing more finished, install bricks or concrete edging.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • have a plan for the project, a designated area;
  • know what material you will use - have it on premises
  • rent some tools necessary for the job like - a compactor
  • shovel, hoe
  • bedding sand
  • pavers
  • landscape fabric
  1. Step 1

Lay out the shape of your pathway, make sure you cover all the length and the width.

  2. Step 2

Make your selection of pavers and materials so you have everything ready

  3. Step 3

Mark the dimensions with a white powder chalk; that will help you to stay symmetrical for the entire distance

  4. Step 4

Use a hoe to dig out borders of the path. That gets you easily started.

  5. Step 5

Excavate sod and soil to 3 or 4 inches within pathway using square shovel.

  6. Step 6

To even the path surface, you will want to use plate compactor to tamp earth down

  7. Step 7

Line path with landscape fabric, when using multiple pieces make sure you overlapping fabric edges 12 to 18 inches

  8. Step 8

Pour bedding sand onto landscape fabric, a few inches deep. Rake smooth, taking care not to poke holes in fabric

  9. Step 9

Place pavers in desired formation. When sure of placement, settle into sand by tapping with mallet.

Fill pathway around borders with pea gravel to grass line.

Tips & Warnings
  • garden paths can show your guests the scenic route to your outdoor gazebo or other backyard attraction, or a separated entertaining area.
