This wasp image is from a children's reader from 1887/1901 called Seaside and Wayside.

Yellow jackets are wasps. They live in the ground. And their removal can be extremely difficult. Some people use special yellow jacket traps, but I have found these do not work well for me.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • large sheet of plywood (4 ft. x 8 ft.)
  • darkness or a rainy day
  1. Step 1

Here's what I did to get rid of the yellow jackets in my yard: First, I tried to figure out where in the ground they lived. I couldn't really see exactly where their underground nest was because there was too much grass, but I had a general sense of where it had to be.

  2. Step 2

Then I waited for a rainy day, when the yellow jackets would not be flying around. I took a large sheet of plywood, and I laid it flat on the ground above the area where the yellow jackets seemed to be entering and exiting the ground.

  3. Step 3

I must have found the right location because after that, my yellow jacket problem went away. No more yellow jackets.

  4. Step 4

I didn't know how long to leave the plywood in place, so I left if there through the rest of the summer, the fall, and the winter. The next spring I removed it. I had to replant the grass where the plywood had been, but it was worth it to me. The yellow jackets never returned.

Tips & Warnings
  • Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly. Use common sense. Yellow jackets do not come out in the rain. They also do not come out at night (I'm told).
