Care for and Shine Hardwood Floors

To care for and shine hardwood floors, there are several steps you can follow to have a beautiful hardwood finish and shine you can be proud of. The hardwood floor needs attention on a regular basis. First off, the classification of "hardwood" does not mean the "hardness of the wood". It is a classification of broad leafed flowering trees such as ash, elm, oak, and maple. Here's how to care for and shine hardwood floors, minus scuffs or grease stains, to show off to family and friends:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Non-gel Toothpaste
  • Sponge
  • Petroleum Jelly
  • Baby Oil
  • Paper Towels
  • Ice Cubes
  1. Step 1

To care for hardwood floors, mix equal parts of distilled white vinegar and vegetable oil. Put it in a spray bottle. Use a clean cotton cloth and work on small sections of the floor at a time.

  2. Step 2

Start by spraying the mixture and rubbing it in with a clean cotton cloth. Take another clean cotton cloth and buff that section until it's as shiny as can be. Then do each section until the entire floor is buffed and shiny.

  3. Step 3

To have a beautiful scuff mark free hardwood floor, use an old clean toothbrush and apply non-gel toothpaste. Scrubb off the scuff mark. Wipe the scuff area clean with a damp cloth or use a sponge.

  4. Step 4

Or use a bit of petroleum jelly on a cloth and work it into the hardwood floor to remove the mark. You can also use baby oil instead of petroleum jelly for this.

  5. Step 5

Once the mark is gone, go over the area with dry paper towels. Make sure there is none of the slippery oil or jelly left on the surface. Use the original mixture of distilled white vinegar and vegetable oil to reshine the surface.

  6. Step 6

For grease stains, cover the stain with one or two ice cubes. As soon as it hardens, carefully scrape the grease off with the dull side of a knife.
Or you can use a spatula or even an old credit card edge is good to use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Newly installed hardwood floors have a urethane finish most likely. Look for a glossy coat of clear plastic on top of the hardwood.
  • A urethane finish shields the hardwood floors from scratches and water damage and other accidents.
  • Be sure to clean the slippery petroleum jelly or baby oil completely off with paper towels so there is no chance of slipping later.
  • Never wax a urethane floor as wax and urethane is not compatible at all. It may ruin your hardwood floor.
