How to Prevent Stains in Your Toilet Bowl

Save

Unsightly stains may develop in your toilet bowl over time if it is not cleaned and treated on a regular basis. The stains typically form due to the amount of certain substances present in the water that leave deposits of red or red-brown stains on the surface of your toilet bowl. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to keep your toilet bowl stain-free.

Things You'll Need

  • Toilet-bowl cleaner
  • Toilet-bowl brush
  • Disposable cleaning gloves
  • Eye protection
  • Toilet-bowl cleaner tablets
  • Water conditioning and filtration system (if applicable)

Clean Your Toilet Bowl

  • Put on disposable gloves, such as the ones you would use to wash your dishes. Use eye goggles to protect your eyes from harsh chemical exposure.

  • Lower the water level in your toilet bowl. You can achieve this by using one of the following methods: turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it; use a bowl swab or toilet plunger to push the water in and out of the trap; or pour 1.5 gallons of water into the toilet.

  • Apply the cleaner to all visible surfaces on the inside of the toilet bowl. Leave the cleaner on for at least 10 minutes to ensure disinfection.

  • Brush the toilet bowl with the toilet swab. Clean the rim first and then the other parts of the toilet bowl. The trap should be scrubbed last.

  • Flush the toilet after you are done cleaning the toilet bowl.

Treatment with Tablets

  • Take the lid off of the toilet tank and flush the toilet.

  • Wait for the water level to sink and for the bottom valve to close.

  • Drop a toilet bowl cleaning tablet into the tank, away from the valve opening. The corner of the tank is a smart place to drop the tablet into.

  • Flush the toilet after waiting 10 minutes.

  • Insert a new tablet once the color is gone to maintain a clean toilet bowl free of stains, odors and build up of various chemicals, minerals, hard water stains and rust.
