Growing green grass for your cat not only provides him with a tasty treat, it will keep him away from your houseplants too. According to Healthy Pet Products, cats eat grass to aid digestion and to help get rid of hairballs formed from grooming. When grass is not available, cats will happily munch on any green plant they can find, even poisonous ones. Growing safe and healthy greens for your cat may protect his health as well as your plants.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Grass seed Plant pot All-purpose potting soil Mason jar Cheesecloth
  1. Step 1

Purchase a mixture of grass seed designed for cats at your local pet store. Plain oats, wheat, rye and oat grass can be substituted instead. You can also purchase cat greens in a kit at the pet store. These come with the seeds, soil and growing container and are quick and easy to use, but do cost a bit more than growing grass from seed in your own clay pots.

  2. Step 2

Place 1 to 2 tablespoons seeds in a mason jar and fill half way with water. Place cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar and hold in place with an elastic band. Allow to soak for 8 hours and drain the water. Shake lightly to remove excess water.

  3. Step 3

Fill the plant pot with all-purpose potting soil. Sprinkle the seeds over the top of the soil and cover with 1/4 inch of soil. Water to thoroughly moisten the soil. Keep evenly moist until sprouts emerge.

  4. Step 4

Place on a sunny windowsill. Sprouts will emerge in a few days. Once they have reached a height of 3 to 4 inches, place in an area where your cat can easily access them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Introduce your kitty greens to your cat when he is near your houseplants to encourage him to eat the grass instead of tasting your plants.
  • Start new cat grass once the grass is several inches high to keep a supply for your kitty.
