Things You'll Need:
- cleaning supplies of your choice.
- Time
-
Step 1
As the old saying goes “clean from top to bottom” this makes a lot a sense. All you will need is some time and your cleaning supplies. Make sure to have a place at the bottom of your house to put thing that can go to the donation bin or trash. You may even want to yard sale or e-bay some of the items that are in good condition.
-
Step 2
Start with the attic if you have one. Go through the boxes of forgotten stuff. A good rule to follow; if you have forgotten that you had and have no need for it and has no sentimental value the get rid of it. Now that thing have been gone through make note of any repairs that may need to be done in that area or even project that you would like to do in that room in the future. Examples of these are install shelves or paint, or re insulate.
-
Step 3
Next go to the top floor of your house. For some this in the main living area or it could be the bedroom area. Dust for cobwebs, and wipe down the ceiling fans. Don't forget the door frames and picture frames. Pull down the curtain or mini blind and wash them and the window. Go through the dresser and closets. Now vacuum the carpets. It hard to clean the carpets this time of year because the weather can be unpredictable, Save this for a nice warm day when you can open the window to help speed the drying time. Strip the bed and vacuum the mattress. Wash the bedding. Again make notes of repairs and projects that you may want to do in these rooms
-
Step 4
Bathrooms are not that hard either. Same thing start at the ceiling and work your way down. But this is a great opportunity to go through the medicine closet and get rid of any out dated medicine, wash the hair brushes and replace old tooth brushes (which should be done a least every six month or after being sick). Again make notes of repairs and project that you may want to do in the bathroom
-
Step 5
In the living room and playrooms again the same thing. Start from top to bottom. Be sure to vacuum the furniture and move the furniture to clean under it. If like me and have yet to buy a TV that hangs on the wall. It a good time to clean under the TV and tie up the wire so they are no longer in the way. You can use zip tie for this. It makes them more manageable. Again make notes for repairs and projects.
-
Step 6
In the kitchen go through all your cabinets and wipe them out. Clean out draws especially that junk draw that we all have in our house. You’d be surprise what you might find there. This is also to go through the food and check expiration date on packages. Not just the side dishes but the baking soda and baking powder that may not be used too often. Again make notes.
-
Step 7
When cleaning your home office go through the papers and shred any that are no longer needed. Also it’s a great time to update your computer and clean out old files. Even check for virus and back it up.
The garage or basement maybe the bottom of the house. If this is the spouse’s domain make him/her help. Again top to bottom and make notes. -
Step 8
Now get rid of the trash. Some towns like mine have spring clean up. It’s when we can take two or three pick up truck load of trash to the dump. Find out if this service is available to you in your area and take advantage of it. Also you can donate clothes to shelters or the Salvation Army. Some time women shelter may even take other item. They may be helping a family start over and need other things like appliances. So consider this when getting rid of that extra toaster that has nothing wrong with it.
By making notes for repairs and projects through out your home, when you decide to start them you will have an idea as to what needs to be done and what can wait. You will also know that you’re starting with a clean room.
