Step 1
Locate the air filter near the carburetor.Lawn mowers will have either a paper air filter or a foam air filter. The instructions for changing these air filters are similar, but with a few different steps.
-
Step 2
Paper Air FilterIf your mower has a paper air filter, simply unscrew the cover and remove the old paper filter. Insert the new paper air filter. The pleat should be facing out. Now screw the cover back on.
-
Step 3
Foam Air FilterIf your mower has a foam air filter, you first want to remove the foam filter unit. Discard the old foam. Once you have removed the old piece of foam, use kerosene to clean the air filter unit. Take the new piece of foam and soak it in clean engine oil. Now squeeze out the excess oil. The best way to get the excess oil out is to use a clean rag and squeeze the excess oil into the rag. The rag will help soak up the excess oil. You are now ready to place the new foam piece into the air filter unit. Place the air filter unit back in place, and screw the cover back on.
