Things You'll Need:
- Guitar
-
Step 1
~ Know What Kind of Guitar You Have ~
This might seem a little silly, but guitar strings are made differently for different types of guitars. That means that you can't simply put your electric guitar strings on your acoustic guitar. -
Step 2
Too Heavy a Gauge & You can Warp the Neck~ Decide on the Gauge ~
There are many levels of gauges. The lighter the gauge, the easier they will be to play. The trade off, however, is a lighter sound. Many guitar pro's suggest never putting anything heavier than a medium gauge on your instrument as they can warp the neck and pull up the bridge. Beginning guitar players should choose a lighter gauge string to start. -
Step 3
Coated Guitar Strings Last Longer~ Decide on Coated or Un-Coated Strings ~
Coated strings cost quite a bit more than un-coated. However, they are worth the extra money as they last considerably longer. -
Step 4
~ Consider Cost ~
Guitar strings aren't terribly expensive, but it does pay to think about price. You don't want to buy a really expensive set of strings and fall in love if you can't continue to afford to buy them. -
Step 5
~ Buy In Bulk ~
If you can afford to, it's best to buy strings in bulk. You'll get a better deal and you'll always have string when you need them. Make sure that you find a brand of strings that you like before making a bulk purchase.
