Jewish people the world over will soon gather to celebrate Passover. In fact, more Jews celebrate Passover than any other Jewish holiday. One of the special gifts of this holiday is the chance to share it with non-Jews and people from other cultures.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Matzah
  • Matzo ball soup
  • Charosis (see recipe)
  • Lot's of good food
  • Haggadahs
  • Horseradish
  • Salt water
  • a dining room table
  • silverware and plates
  • A special cup
  • A shankbone
  • Parsley
  • Wine and/or grapejuice
  1. Step 1

Invite your family and friends for this special night. To make things easier on yourself, ask people to bring a special dish so that you don't have to do all the cooking yourself.

  2. Step 2

Use your special dishes. Some people only use these dishes during Passover, particularly if they are keeping strictly Kosher for the holiday.

  3. Step 3

For the seder plate have a central location but be sure to have several places on the table for the charosis, salt water, parsley, etc. It will make things much easier to distribute.

  4. Step 4

Choose a Haggadah that will work for young and old and involve children as much as possible. In addition to having them read the 4 questions, have them repeat the ten plagues after the leader. There are also stores that offer a bag of the 10 plagues. Kids love to have something they can touch. Of course, don't forget the hunt for the Afikomen. Choose a prize that is simple but something boys or girls would enjoy.

  5. Step 5

Don't forget the singing. It will definitely add to the event. Find someone ahead of time that knows the major tunes to the prayers and other songs so that they can keep everyone else in tune.

  6. Step 6

Invite some non-Jewish friends to celebrate the event. It will be a cross cultural experience that they won't forget if they've never experienced a Seder.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can take shortcuts and buy a matzo ball soup mix, but you really don't need to. If you buy matzo meal there is a good recipe right on the box. A very good recipe can also be found in an old standard, The Settlement Cookbook
  • Be sure to have white and beet flavored horseradish so that those who don't like it so hot have a choice.
  • Provide pillows for those who want to recline
  • Be prepared for grumbling if you hold a seder longer than 30 minutes. Some folks are used to a quick Seder and others like to have 1-2 hours Seders
