Use Groundcovers in Pots on a Shady Patio

What to do with flower pots during winter? What to grow in pots on shady balconies and patios? The answer is easy, Use groundcovers to make easy care flower pots.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Large pots are very in style for placement on balconies, decks and patios as well as the front entrance to the house. But these pots do not look their best during the winter months or in areas where there is deep shade.

  2. Step 2

Look for groundcovers that will thrive in the conditions that you need the pot to sit. Pachysandra for the northern, shady side of the house. Liriope for a sunny area.

  3. Step 3

During the summer dig out the middle of the pot and add flowering plants such as impatiens for shady areas and vinca for sunny areas.

  4. Step 4

Make sure there is enough soil to keep the roots moist even in dry spells. Mix in some Watersorb crystals in the potting mix. Put more of the Watersorb crystals lower in the pot. Water once a week if it has not rained.

Tips & Warnings
  • For shady areas, look for ground covers that have varigated leaves that are accented with white.
