Step 1
As a groundcover, place in a shady area where it will not be exposed to winter winds or sun. This can be invasive if the vines mature to the point that they develop large berries which birds carry and drop. Every few years, either mow with the mower on a high setting in the spring or pull up the largest vines in late winter or early spring. English Ivy can also be invasive through the expanding vines. You will need to constantly patrol the perimiter where you are growing English Ivy.

Step 2
Use Ivy in window boxes or large pots for shady decks and patios. You will be rewarded with cascading greenery. Cut a third of the vines back each year to continue to promote new, fresh growth.

Step 3
Baltica and Thorndale varieties tolerate cold better than others.
