Step 1
Hostas come in a stunning range of sizes, from 4 inches to 4 feet across! Leaves can be white to green to blue. Flowers can be white or purple. In other words, Hostas come in a huge number of varieties. You can make sure you are getting the variety that you want by either researching varieties and their characteristics online or by going to the nursery or garden center and buying them during the peak of their season in July.

Step 2
Place Hostas in dappled shade, while they do not like full sun they grow faster and have more blooms if they have some sun. Of course they are fine in full shade as well.

Step 3
Once planted Hostas take about 2 years for the smaller varieties and 3 -4 years for the larger varieties to hit their peak. After 4-5 years the hostas may need to be divided. Take your shovel and dig a hole where you want the hostas. The hole needs to only as large as a shovel full of hosta roots. Dig up a slice of the hosta roots at the area that is most dense. Put the dirt from the hole in the area where you cut out the hosta roots, put the Hosta with roots into the new hole. Some use a cylindrical bulb planting hand tool to do this. Making a clean transfer of roots and dirt between the hole that is being thinned and the new planting area.
