It is easy to be a New York Yankees fan. Rooting for this team requires you to have thick skin. Baseball fans either love them or they hate them. There is no middle ground.

   First and foremost, as a Yankees fan, you must hate the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees degrade the Red Sox and vice versa. These two teams define what a sports rivalry should be.

2. Yankees fans need to know the history of their team. If you don't know the ins and outs of your team, do not get in a conversation with a true Yankees fan. Buy some books on the history of the Yankees and read up!

3. Try to watch as many games as you can. It doesn't matter if it is at Yankee Stadium or on television. If you cannot do either, you should at least know what happened in the game and how the box score looked for conversations the next day.

4. You should keep up with your team even when the season is over. The offseason is often a very busy time for the Yankees. Many free agents are signed and this always creates excitement in the Yankee community.

5. It is important to understand that the athletes that make up the New York Yankees have lives and make decisions separate from the team. These individuals sometimes say or do things that reflect badly on the team. These players are human and subject to mistakes. This shouldn't be taken out on the team. The New York Yankees are all about baseball. The players are not. They are not only athletes, but fathers, boyfriends, partiers, and so on. Life happens to them and sometimes they do not handle it the best way.

6. Be sure to buy young children that you know some Yankees apparel. Keep the tradition going!

• When talking to a Red Sox fan, never let a discussion about your teams start a fight. It isn't worth it. Just have fun teasing each other.
