Sell Handmade Jewelry...Where At and For How Much

Lots of ladies are creating and selling their own handmade jewelry these days! This is a fun hobby to get into and it also helps bring in a little extra cash!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Beaded earrings, bracelets, necklaces, keyrings, whatever you make
  • A nice display stand or case
  • Jewelry sized price tags
  • Detailed information about what materials used
  1. Step 1

Handmade jewelry is a fantastic hobby to get into! Beaded jewelry is HOT in the retail market and women love purchasing jewelry! My few tips will help you in deciding where you would like to sell your items and how much you should priced at.

  2. Step 2

Finding a place to sell your jewelry can be tricky, especially if you aren't savvy in the resale industry. There are lots of ways to begin selling your unique pieces and designs. Some ideas would be to sell online, at a local farmers market or antique mall, art hop, art fairs, beauty shops and consignment shops! All of these areas are usually loaded with shoppers who search for these types of items and happily pay for it!

  3. Step 3

Make sure to keep track of what you are spending on each piece of jewelry made. Always make note of what materials you use for each piece. Ladies who purchase jewelry always enjoy knowing the name or types of beads or stones used as well as if it is sterling silver or stainless steel. Noting this on your jewelry cards will help drive sales and you can increase your markup on these types of pieces.

  4. Step 4

Pricing for handmade items can be tricky. A good rule of thumb for my consignment shop is to mark up the piece about 30-40% of the cost of the item. This will not only help you, the designer, earn back the money put into the piece, but will help you with a little extra income as well. Figure this markup out on a calculator by entering the amount you spent on the piece and multiplying it by 30 or 40% and adding that on to the amount you spent. For example, if you made a set of earrings for $15, you should mark it up by $4.50. You can also have set prices for each of the different items you offer. $12 for earrings, $18 for bracelets, $29 for necklaces and so on. Be mindful of today's consumers, with the recession in the economy people are holding on to their money more than ever. Always price reasonably! Ask yourself how much you would pay for the item.

  5. Step 5

Purchasing a display stand or display case can be easily found online. Check out RobertHam.com or other store supply warehouses, they will offer the best display items at reasonable prices. Purchase white string tags or sticky jewelry price tags. It is wonderful to offer your customers a pretty box or nice packaging when they purchase something from you. Plus, it will bring in referrals and repeat business! With these few tips, you can be very successful in earning extra money by making your own jewelry!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you sell your jewelry through a consignment shop, always ask what the split is. My personal store uses a 30/70 split with homemade pieces. The store keeps 30% and the designer receives 70%.
  • If you sell your jewelry through a beauty salon, ask what they charge to display your items.
  • If interested in selling at an antique fair, art fair, or farmers market, be sure to calculate the cost of renting the space to have your items displayed. Some places charge by the booth or table, every place has different rules.
  • Always be honest and straightforward in knowing about your business!
  • Knowledge of types of beads, strings, gemstones, etc. is great to show your customers you know what you are selling!
