How to Make and Play with a Chinese Jump Rope
Chinese jump rope is an alternative to the traditional jump rope that many children are familiar with. Just as with a traditional jump rope, a Chinese jump rope requires three people to play: two to hold the rope and one to jump. However, instead of turning the rope, the holders loop the rope around their legs and the jumper jumps in and out of the resulting rectangle. While the rules can be altered in numerous ways, the basic steps are the same. Children can even make their own rope to use for the game.
Instructions
-
Make a Chinese Jump Rope
-
1
Purchase a spool of elastic cord in any color.
-
2
Measure out at least 64 inches of the cord and cut it.
-
-
3
Tie the two ends together to form a large loop of rope for the game.
-
4
Overlap two rubberbands. Fold the top rubberband underneath and pull it up through the circle created by the two rubberbands to connect them together.
-
5
Repeat Step 4 to connect all 36 rubberbands together.
-
6
Tie the two ends together to create a continuous loop of rubberbands.
Play Chinese Jump Rope
-
7
Loop the rope around the legs of the two people who are the holders. Stand at least four feet apart with the rope taut and legs about shoulder-width apart.
-
8
Jump so each foot lands on the outside of the ropes, one on each side, while calling out "out."
-
9
Hop to one side so the right foot is in the middle and the other foot is on the outside of the ropes, then hop to the other side so the left foot is in the middle and the other foot is outside. Shout "side" with each hop.
-
10
Repeat Steps 1 and 2, shouting "in" and "out" with the corresponding moves.
-
11
Jump onto the rope with each foot landing on one side while calling out "on."
-
12
Move the rope up the legs gradually until the jumper misses. The jumper then changes places with a holder and the holder becomes the jumper.

Tips & Warnings
Many variations exist, including holding the rope with one foot, creating a Christmas tree with one player using one foot and the other using both feet, and using your feet to twist the rope into a diamond shape before jumping.
