Step 1
DAILY PROTECTION - Apply sunscreen to your face and any other body parts that may be exposed to the sun. Make sure that the sunscreen protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Not all sunscreens protect both, so read the label. Also check to see if the SPF amount meets your needs. First you will need to know how long you can stay in the sun without burning. If you can stay in the sun for 15 minutes without burning and you purchase a SPF of 10, you will then be able to stay in the sun for 150 minutes without burning (15min. x 10spf). Reapply often, especially after entering the water or toweling off. Even if you sunscreen is water proof, you will still need to reapply after getting out of the water to continue the coverage.
-
Step 2
EXTRA PROTECTION FOR SENSITIVE AREAS - Areas such as your nose and places that do not get a lot of sun but are now exposed should be protected with a stronger SPF sunscreen.
-
Step 3
COVER UP - If possible wear a wide brimmed hat, especially if you will be exposed to the sun for long periods of time. The hat will protect your face, head and neck. Wear other light weight clothing items if they are appropriate for your destination such as light weight pants and top.
-
Step 4
SUN PROTECTION CLOTHING AND SUITS - There are many clothing articles on the market today that protect you from the sun and are also able to go into water. There are short and long sleeved tops, shorts and one piece suits made of a light weight nylon material that protects you from the sun and dries quickly when you get out of the water.
-
Step 5
HEALTHY SUN EXPOSURE - The sun mixes with a chemical in our bodies to produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D has been linked to many health benefits including protection from certain illnesses and diseases. Expose your skin to the sun for 15 minutes up to two times per week without sunscreen to receive these benefits. If your skin burns with less than 15 minutes of sun exposure, cut your time down.

on 3/24/2009 Here is an uncommon must very effective approach that can work sometimes: See where your shadow is pointing and just look that way. This way the sun won't hit you in the face.
