Instructions

    • 1

Inventory how many pieces of furniture you must pack and protect, so that you'll have an idea of how many packing materials you will need.

    • 2

Purchase enough packing materials. These would include stretch wraps or foam wraps, furniture blankets, sofa covers, protection bags, bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, packing tape and filling materials like foam peanuts or Styrofoam pellets. Blankets, towels and crumpled paper will also be useful.

    • 3

Disassemble furniture that can be taken apart. Disassemble bed frames and tie the parts together for easy hauling. Dismantle tables that are held by nuts and bolts, place the hardware in a plastic bag and then tape the bag to the underside of the table. Disassemble bookcases that are easy to reassemble and keep the pegs and other hardware together in a plastic bag, clearly labeled.

    • 4

Use stretch wraps or foam wraps to protect the legs of beds, chairs and tables.

    • 5

Use furniture blankets to protect headboards, dressers, bureaus and chests. Wrap the blankets around the furniture and secure with cord or heavy-duty packing tape.

    • 6

Use protection bags to keep mattresses and cushions clean.

    • 7

Protect mirrors, paintings, frames and other accessories by wrapping them in corrugated cardboard or bubble wrap. Secure with cord, tape or several layers of stretch wrap and mark with "FRAGILE."

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using tape to close wooden drawers because the adhesive could affect or damage the finish. Use cord or stretch wrap to keep door and drawers closed.
