Step 1
Make an appointment as a new patient at several orthodontist offices. Typically, first visits are consultation visits and do not cost anything. At these appointments, get a price quote about the procedures you will need done and all accompanying costs like retainers, bracket repairs, etc. Then continue your orthodontic care with the orthodontist who gave you the best price quote.
-
Step 2
Avoid repeating procedures. Many family dentists do a Panorex x-ray at their office. Ask for a copy and bring this with you to your orthodontist. This will save you from the costs of having the x-ray taken again at the orthodontist's office.

Step 3
Make sure you investigate your insurance policy about their age restrictions on getting braces. Some policies change their coverage for braces after the patient reaches a certain age. Be sure that you know what you are dealing with.

Step 4
When shopping for orthodontists, ask about any discounts they offer. Some orthodontists will offer a family discount if more than one person is getting braces or other orthodontic services through their office. Additionally, the orthodontist may reduce the cost of braces if you offer to provide full payment upfront.
