Magic the Gathering and other collectable cards get dirty over time from handling, playing, and general use. Since these cards have value, most people like to keep them clean. Even with card protectors, dirt and grease can make it's way onto your cards. Here's a simple and effective way to clean your cards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dirty cards
  • Water, preferably run through a charcoal filter
  • Soft, lint free cloth, THATS CLEAN!
  1. Step 1

Find a hard, flat surface where you can work, like a desktop, table, or the like. Clean your work area first! Use an appropriate cleaner for the surface, and if possible one with a degreaser. When you are done cleaning it, wipe it down again with a damp cloth and then DRY THE AREA. This is so there is no cleaner residue left that will harm your cards.

  2. Step 2

Take a wide mouth glass and fill it with water. You won't need very much, so don't worry about the amount. Lightly dip a corner of your cleaning cloth into the water. You don't want to soak the cloth, just get it wet.

  3. Step 3

Lay your dirty card flat on the surface. Use the damp corner to GENTLY rub off the dirt and grease. It may take time to get some spots off. Re-wet the cloth and use new areas of it as needed, but be patient and gentle if you want to preserve your card. Over wetting will cause warping of the card. Too much pressure will wear ink off the card, especially on the back wear weathering is most obvious.

  4. Step 4

When you are done with the cleaning, lay the card(s) between two pieces of paper towel and lay a textbook, phonebook, or the like on them for an hour or so. This will dry them while keeping them from warping.

  5. Step 5

Viola! Now put your cards back in protective sleeves and don't play while eating pizza!

Tips & Warnings
  • Try laying the card to be cleaned on another cloth to avoid weathering the opposite side while cleaning.
  • Using a dirty cloth can rub dirt in!
  • Rub the cloth in the direction of the closest edge. Rubbing it perpendicular to the edge may create a grease 'smear' along the edge. A motion straight out will minimize this.
