Paint a Striped Wall
Paint a Striped Wall

With a few steps of careful planning and assistance from easy-to-use tools, painting a striped wall can be an easy do-it-yourself project.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • masking tape
  • putty knife
  • pencil
  • rollers or paint brushes
  • paint
  1. Step 1

Decide how wide you want to paint the stripes on the wall and the color for the striped wall. For example, if you are wanting wide stripes that are 12 inches apart, use a tape measure and pencil to mark every 12 inches.

  2. Step 2

Use a level to make straight lines at each 12 inch interval from floor to ceiling or however tall you want to paint the stripes on the wall.

  3. Step 3

Take a piece of masking tape and place the edge on the outside of each line. Use a putty knife or other sharp, flat edge to press the masking tape down so paint will not seep under the masking tape.

  4. Step 4

Paint the stripes on the wall in between the masking tape using a roller or paintbrush. If using a dark color, use two to three coats.

  5. Step 5

When the paint has dried for an hour, remove the tape. Leaving it on longer my cause the paint to peel with the tape removal. If the paint has dried or you forget to remove the tape, use a utility knife to run along the edge of the tape next to the paint. Press lightly as you are only cutting along a thin layer of paint so the tape will not remove paint from the wall.

  6. Step 6

If wishing to paint the striped wall two different colors, repeat the steps for the remaining stripes that have not yet been painted. First, allow the first set of stripes to dry completely before applying masking tape. This information will be listed on the paint can and varies by paint.
