How to Get Involved with a Charity
Whether you have just a few hours on your hands or want to make a real difference in the lives of others, volunteering your time with a nonprofit organization is a great way to build skills, meet people and have fun. With so many volunteer opportunities in every community, it can be bewildering to get started. Take time to think about your interests, your passions and your talents before you begin so that you make a choice that satisfies you.

1
Think about the type of organization you would like to be involved in. From the American Cancer Society to the American Diabetes Association to the Children's Miracle Network and more, there are many groups that can use help. Consider local organizations like hospitals and libraries, which rely on volunteers to remain successful.
-
2
Consider some roles you might fill in the organization. Fund-raising abilities, writing chops and data management skills will be put to good use. If you're a people person, you could be a greeter, a docent or interact with the public in a useful way.

Call or email the local chapter of your charity of choice. Introduce yourself and make your new contact aware of ways in which you could help. Ask if there is a volunteer coordinator, board member or employee who can assist you in getting involved. Some organizations have set parameters and roles for volunteers, while others may simply accept help when it is given.
-
4
Stop by the organization's office or attend a volunteer meeting. Introduce yourself and meet fellow volunteers. These acquaintances can ensure your volunteer experience is even more enjoyable.
-
5
Be honest about how much time you have to give. When it comes to free labor, most charities will take as much as you can provide. Set time parameters and stick to them.
