How to Repair a Leaks in Your Roof
After a heavy rain, you may be surprised to find leaks appearing along the roof. Broken or loose shingles along valleys and near the chimney may let water through. Even a small leak can be dangerous if left too long. Water entering the roof and dampening the wood can lead to structural damage that can cause the roof to cave in. If a leak is major or you see evidence of several leaks along the entire roof area, have the roof structure checked by a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Set up a ladder on even ground and climb up to the roof.

Inspect the roof for signs of broken shingles.

Cut a piece of aluminum flashing with tin snips 1 inch narrower and 4 inches longer than the broken shingle.

Lift up on the broken shingle with a pry bar to loosen the nails.

Apply roofing cement to the exposed surface underneath the shingle. Make three long lines to ensure the metal flashing sticks.

Press the metal flashing down onto the roof cement.

Apply three beads of cement to the top of the metal flashing and press the shingle down on to the metal.
