How to Potty Train a Boy

For those who have both boy and girls you understand that potty training a boy is much different from potty training a girl. When my son was of potty training age (he just turned 3 years old)we decided he was ready to use the toilet. Not sure how to proceed I talked to my sister-in-law that had a 4 year old that was potty trained already. She gave me tons of useful tips and I found some of my own on the way.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lots of underwear
  • Easy on/off pants
  • Thin maxi pad (explained below)
  1. Step 1

First my sister-in-law had her 4 year old son show my 3 yr old how to pee on a tree outside when we were camping. My son was so excited to see his big cousin doing something a older kid did that he wanted to try it. That weekend he peed on lots of trees! When we got home I showed him how to do the same thing in the potty. At first I taught him sitting down because it was less messy. He didn't like it as well but soon was peeing in the potty.

  2. Step 2

After my son mastered peeing in the potty inside on a toilet and peeing standing up outside we decided to show him how to stand up and pee in the potty. My husband showed him by example again of how to stand and pee in the potty. This part was easy! Boys like to stand and pee much more then sitting!

  3. Step 3

The last thing was how to poop in the potty. If your son is like most this was very hard! My son hated pooping in the potty. We tried pull-up but they don't work, most kids treat them just like diapers. My son didn't care what he had on even if it was underwear he would poop in it. So I started to look for signs of his having to poop. A lot of the time he would go off in the corner and poop somewhere so when I knew he was doing that I'd send him to the bathroom where he'd poop in his pull-up. As soon as he was in that routine I'd have him try on the potty. Once he tried it once he started always doing it!

  4. Step 4

The last thing is boys have more trouble than girls at realizing that they have to go poop so my son would have a small accident in his underwear than rush to the potty to finish. I got so tired of washing underwear out, I started buying cheap underwear and just throwing them away but that was too costly. I figured out that putting a thin maxi pad in his underwear he didn't feel like it was a pull-up so he wouldn't poop in it on purpose but when he had an accident I'd just take the pad off and put a new one on after he finished in the potty. Soon he understood his bodies cues and stopped having accidents!! Hope this helps!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient with your little one, they will get it!
  • Don't punish them for having accidents, it's counter productive- I know I tried :)
