How to Succeed In Life Without A College Degree

There was a time when a college degree almost automatically meant a guaranteed job and great pay. But things have changed over the years, especially now. If you only have a high school diploma or never went to college you still can succeed in any endeavor you attain to.

  • College Alternatives - Many have gotten great jobs by going to a vocational/technical school and picking necessary hands on skills like electrical, automotive, plumbing and woodwork. Many high schools have these programs. Some have went from a voc/tech high school straight into a city job. There are also business schools that teach computers, secretarial skills, etc. If you're past the school age you can go online and find continuing education classes in a school or college near by. These classes usually last a few weeks but it enables you to develop new skills that can get you work.

  • Do your best - I know of many who didn't have a degree who started on a job in a beginning position and rose to a top tier (making much money) position. How? By doing the best that they can. Don't let yourself get lazy or compare yourself to others with degrees. Do your best and you get noticed. One friend of mine, who didn't go to college, started out interning at a marketing firm and a couple of years later is making $80,000 a year working only 3 days a week! She was a hard worker (still is), and now manages multi-million dollar programs.

  • Set Goals - Have a goal in mind and work to achieve it. If you're in a clerical position for example, look for upcoming opportunities for growth. It may mean learning a new skill or asking someone more experienced to teach you, but it will help you reach your goal.

  • Have the right view of success - Don't always look at the making of tons of money as success. I would rather make less than have a position that gives me too much stress.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be flexible. Take a job opportunity for the purpose of having a job and grow from there.
  • Don't look for the "perfect" job all the time. Whatever job you have, make it your own until another one comes. Most people don't LOVE their jobs, but they like the fact that it brings in an income and they can do it successfully.
