Easter lilies are regal, sweet smelling, breathtaking flowers. The Easter Lilly also has a strong historical backing and is commonly used to celebrate Easter because of it. It is said that the Easter Lilly was found after Christ had been put to death, growing in Garden of Gethsemane. Legend is that the Lilies had sprung up where Christ's last drips of sweat and tears fell, before dying.

The Easter Lilly is also associated with the virgin Mary, as the lily was given to her when she found out she was to have Jesus as a son.

Easter Lilies portray purity, new life, and hope. They grow from a bulb and blooms naturally in May, but the Easter flowers are forced for Easter in April.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Easter Lilly
  1. Step 1

Show off the Easter lilies in an area away from direct heat and in indirect sunlight. The flowers prefer temperatures right around 60°.

Diffused light is best. To create a diffused bright light, place a sheer curtain up and set the Easter Lilly in front of it. This will help break up the light and protect the Lilly from the harsh direct rays of sun.

  2. Step 2

Take off the yellow anthers, that contain the pollen. Removing the anthers from the Easter lilies, will help the flower to last longer and keep it from becoming stained. You will also be able to smell the flowers without the fear of a yellow stained nose!

  3. Step 3

Water every day to keep the soil wet. If any water drains off, make sure the water doesn't sit there, keeping the root too wet. Drain off any extra water.

  4. Step 4

Remove withered flowers from the Easter Lilly. This can encourage new buds to form, making the flowering cycle last even longer.

  5. Step 5

If you would like to keep your Easter lilies outside, you can successfully grow Easter Lilies if you are in zone 6 or warmer. Plant after the weather is warm and there is no danger of a frost. If properly protected against the winter, you will have Easter lilies blooming again next May.
