How to Teach Guitar to Children

How to Teach Guitar to Children thumbnail
Music is a healthy outlet for children.

Teaching a child how to play guitar can help set him up for a future of discipline and creativity. Playing music can be an outlet for people as they attempt to cope with life's stresses. So, if a child learns how to play guitar, he can become an experienced player by the time he is a teenager and later in life, making picking up the guitar and strumming a few chords easier and more relaxing.

Instructions

    • 1

Hand her a guitar that is appropriate for her size. For example, if she is between 3 and 6 years old, give her a half-size acoustic. Kids age 6 to 9 should have a three-quarter acoustic, kids aged 9 to 12 get a student acoustic, kids at age 12 get a classical and those who are 13 get a full-size acoustic. These are general guidelines.

    • 2

Give him a guitar with the sound box on the right side if he is right handed and a guitar with the sound box on the left if he is left handed. Most people strum with the hand they most frequently use.

    • 3

Position the sound box to her chest and on her thigh furthest from the neck. Place her arm at the top-right edge of the box. Let her strum each string without pressing on the frets so that she gets an idea of what the guitar sounds like. Point out that the lower, deeper notes are at the top and the higher notes are at the bottom.

    • 4

Have him put his thumb on the back of the guitar's neck and place his first finger on the front of the neck, on the first fret on the first string. Tell him that this note is "F."

    • 5

Teach her "Ode to Joy" or another simple song as her first song. Position her fingers in front of the corresponding frets. Show her how you play it on your guitar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember!

  • Depending on where you live in the world there will (quite understandably) be rules and regulations relating to adults who have access to children. Make sure that you comply with the laws of your area.
