Instructions

    • 1

Cut your materials into strips of fabric. The strips of fabric for your rag rug should all be the same width. Two inches wide is usually a good width, but you can vary this depending on personal preference.

    • 2

Take three strips, hold them together at one end evenly and tie them in a knot. Using a large safety pin, pin the knot to a pillow. This will enable you to have a firmer grasp of the strips when you are braiding the strips for your rag rug.

    • 3

Once your knot is fastened to a pillow you will start braiding the strips together. Make sure the braid is tight. At the end of the braid you can extend each strip by sewing or knotting on another length of material. Again make sure your strips are the same width.

    • 4

After your braid is a few feet in length you will need to create a coil shape from the braid. This coil will form the shape for your rag rug. Start the coil by unhooking the knot from the safety pin and form a coil with knot in the center. Sew the rows of braid together by hand so they stay in the round shape.

Continue braiding, coiling and sewing until your rag rug reaches your desired size.
