How to Make Puff Paint

Things you'll need

Children love to work with paint and make crafts. With homemade puff paint, you can combine these two elements and make a creative project for children of all ages.
This paint is not like ordinary paint, either. The paint puffs up as it dries and can be made with everyday household ingredients. Making this paint can also be an excellent learning experience on how to measure ingredients and do simple math.

Things You'll Need

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Squeeze bottle
  • Measuring cup
  • Funnel

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1 cup of salt and pour it into a mixing bowl.

    • 2

Measure 1 cup of flour and pour it into the same mixing bowl. Mix with a whisk.

    • 3

Measure 1 cup water and gradually add it to the mixed flour and salt. Whisk all of these ingredients together until the mixture is thick and smooth. This mixture will make about 8 oz. of paint.

    • 4
      Blue food coloring

Add food coloring and whisk until the color is evenly dispersed. Four drops of food coloring will color the mixture completely. You can add more for a darker color.

    • 5
      Funnel made of paper

With a funnel, pour the mixture into a 2 oz. squeeze bottle.

    • 6
      The End

Squeeze the colored paint onto whatever you wish to decorate. Allow approximately 1 hour for the paint to dry. It will retain its raised form as it dries and puff out even further.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have funnel, you can make one from any type of paper. Roll the paper so that the resulting funnel is larger on one end (where you will pour the paint into) and smaller on the other end (where the paint will come out of). You can use smaller squeeze bottles so you can make more colors. Don't worry if this paint gets in the mouth, it is nontoxic.

  • Food coloring stains; be careful and have soap on hand for spills.
