How to Install the HP Deskjet 5440 Printer
The HP Deskjet 5440 is a color photo printer, though it can also be used with plain paper and envelopes for other printing. It is inexpensive and is only 18 inches wide. The setup for the HP Deskjet 5440 is not difficult and should take about 30 minutes.

Connect the power cord to the adapter, then to the printer, and plug it into a power outlet. Press the power button to turn the printer on.

Open the paper tray. Slide the paper guide to the left, and put the paper into the tray, moving it as far in as it will go. Push the paper width guide until it is firmly against the paper. Lower the out tray and pull out the tray extension. Fold out the stopper on the extension.

Open the printer cover. Once the print cartridge cradle moves to the right, remove the print cartridge from its package and take off the tape. With the copper strips on the bottom, press the cartridge into the cradle until it snaps in place. Repeat this process for the second cartridge.

Insert the software disk into the computer's disk drive. (If the disk has been misplaced or additional software is needed for the operating system, visit the HP website.) The installation program should begin automatically. If it does not, install the software manually (see next step).

To manually install the printer driver in Microsoft Windows, click "Start," then "Run"; browse for the setup file on the CD. Then click on the file and hit "OK."
On a Macintosh, locate the disk icon on the desktop and double-click on it. Then double-click the file installer icon in the window that comes up. -

Follow the instructions on the screen to run the setup, and attach the USB cord when prompted. Complete the registration information to receive product updates and access the support section of the HP website.

When prompted by the software setup, restart the computer.

Do not put your fingers inside a printer when the power is on. Only install the correct HP or compatible print cartridge in your printer.
