Instructions

    • 1

Combine ¼ cup OxiClean powdered solution with ¼ cup white vinegar in a small mixing bowl, until a semi-thick paste is formed.

    • 2

Add 10 to 20 drops of essential oil. Try lemon, peppermint or tea tree for pet stains and odors or lavender for a general pleasant scent, although any essential oil will work.

    • 3

Combine the vinegar solution with 1 gallon very hot water in a bucket with pour spout. Stir well to combine.

    • 4

Pour the carpet cleaning solution into the machine's reservoir. For heavily soiled or high-traffic areas, add ½ cup club soda to the reservoir.

    • 5

Test a small hidden area of the carpet for color fastness before using the carpet-cleaning solution on large, visible areas. Place a few tablespoons of the mixed solution on the carpet, wait several minutes, and check for fading. If the carpet looks normal, it's safe to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Essential oil can be left out of the carpet cleaning solution if it is unavailable, and the mixture will still clean effectively. Febreeze, or the generic equivalent, may be substituted for vinegar, if necessary or desired.
