Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Elastic
  • Cotton fabric
  • Matching thread
  • Scissors
  • Needle or sewing machine
  1. Step 1

Cut a piece of elastic to the length needed for a snug fit around your head. When worn, the elastic should be comfortable and fit well without being stretched very far. Most of the stretching is done when putting the headband on, not when wearing it. A standard adult headband should be about 16 inches, but you can adjust this as needed.

  2. Step 2

Cut a length of fabric twice as long as your elastic and twice as wide as your design for the finished headband. A good width to begin with is about 1 1/2 inches. For this, your fabric should be just over 3 inches.

  3. Step 3

Fold the fabric in half so that you have the desired width for your headband. Sew the sides of the fabric together to create a long tube-like shape.

  4. Step 4

Turn the fabric tub inside out, so that the seam is on the inside. Feed the elastic through the fabric. Scrunch up the fabric around the elastic till you can reach both ends. If there is too much gathered fabric for your taste, you may want to shorten the fabric a bit.

  5. Step 5

Sew the ends of the elastic together, with the elastic feeding through the fabric tube. Sew the ends of the fabric together around the elastic. This will create a finished headband.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add embroidery or sew buttons, beads or bows onto the headband to give it your own unique touch. This style of headband is especially popular with small girls who will appreciate the glitter of some added sequins.
