Find the food source that is attracting the fruit flies. Most times it is fruit itself or a garbage can. Remove the fruit if that is where the flies are, or take out the trash. Whatever the source of the attraction, remove it from your home.

You can make several types of traps to catch the fruit flies with apple-cider vinegar. One way is the bowl trap. Put a bowl on the counter and fill it with a little apple-cider vinegar. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Make sure it is tight across the top. Poke several small holes in the top of the plastic wrap. The fruit flies will be able to fly into the bowl, but they will not be able to get out.

Use a plastic bag. Put apple-cider vinegar in the sealable bag. Zip it up until there is about an inch left. Watch the bag, and when you see that it is full of fruit flies, simply zip it shut and toss it out.

Trap them with a soda bottle. Cut off the upper third of an empty 2-liter plastic bottle. Put a small amount of apple-cider vinegar in the bottle. Turn the top half of the bottle that was cut off upside down so it acts as a cone. Insert it into the bottom half of the plastic bottle. Seal the seam with duct tape to prevent the fruit flies from escaping. Like the bowl method, fruit flies will be able to enter the bottle but not get out.
