Step 1
Wash your hair to prepare for your new cut. While shampooing, make sure you massage the head to remove any dead skin from the scalp. You should also condition your hair as you normally would. Wrap a towel around your head and remove any excess water from your hair. Don't dry your hair---it should be wet while you cut it.
-
Step 2
Comb and part your hair using a fine-tooth comb. Make sure all tangles are removed and your part is in its normal position.
-
Step 3
Decide how long the longest layer should be. This will be the total length of the hair when the cut is finished. Take the regular trimming shears and cut all of the hair straight across the back. Remember, that you are cutting wet hair, and the hair will be about 1/3 inch shorter when it dries.
-
Step 4
Using the layering scissors, work your way up to the shortest layer. Take the next section of your hair and hold it at a 90 to 95 degree. Holding it out at an angle allows the hair to fall toward the front so you can see which sections you have trimmed and which you haven't. Repeat this step for each layer you would like to create.
-
Step 5
Comb the hair down straight and check for any uneven layers or stray hairs. If necessary, take the regular trimming shears and trim just that part. Keep combing the hair down until you don't see any uneven layers.
