Broiled salmon

Salmon is a wonderful tasting fish, as well as being a healthy one for you to eat. Salmon like many fish has omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are known for protecting you from a number of very serious health issues such as cancer, arthritis, heart attack and stroke. This by itself is reason enough to eat salmon, but this versatile fish can be cooked a number of different ways and no matter how it is prepared it tastes fantastic. These reasons are enough for most people to consider adding salmon into their diets. Instructions

    • 1

Place one of your oven racks 5 to 6 inches from the broiler coil.

    • 2

Pre-heat the broiler in your oven. While you can pre-heat it to the high setting, because some ovens get hotter than others, it is recommended that you broil salmon on the medium setting.

    • 3

Add a little vegetable oil to your salmon steaks. You can spread the oil around with a spoon.

    • 4

Season your salmon steaks by sprinkling some sea salt and white pepper on them.

    • 5

Spread around a small amount of vegetable onto the broiler pan.

    • 6

Put the broiler pan in the oven and broil for 5 to 10 minutes or until the first side of the fish is brown.

    • 7

Using an oven mitt, pull out the oven rack. With the tongs, flip the salmon steaks over.

    • 8

Put the oven rack back in place and allow your salmon steaks to broil another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the second side is golden brown.

    • 9

Before removing the salmon from the oven, check the temperature. You want the inner temperature of your salmon to be at least 161 degrees before removing it from the oven.

    • 10

Remove the salmon steaks and allow them to sit for a moment. With fish, the internal temperature can actually go up for a bit even after you remove it from the oven, so it's a good idea to give it a moment to sit before eating it.

    • 11

Add lemon slices and enjoy broiled salmon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Broil your salmon with the skin on, it won't fall apart so easily. If you really love the idea of grilled salmon, you might consider getting some cast iron grill grates that you can put over a shallow pan, instead of a broiler pan. You can heat up the grill as the broiler heats up and then broil your salmon steaks the same as you would with a broiler pan. You'll notice the lovely grill marks when you take out your salmon steaks.

  • Some ovens get hotter than others, so if you notice that as soon as you put your salmon steaks in to grill that they are burning, turn down the broiler to the next lowest setting. If your raw salmon steaks were touched by anything--your hands, the counter, a plate or eating utensils--make sure you wash those items well in hot soapy water to be sure no bacteria from the raw fish is transferred to anything else.
