Praying the rosary is a sacred, treasured devotion in the Catholic church. This tradition includes the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, which are prayed repeatedly, in the Joyous, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries. These mysteries recount events from the lives of Mary and Jesus. Children can learn to participate and will enjoy taking part in this tradition if they have a rosary they have made for themselves.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 feet of waxed polyester thread or sturdy silk cord
  • Craft glue or clear nail polish
  • One crucifix
  • Six beads, all one color (Our Father beads)
  • 53 beads, all in a second color (Hail Mary beads)
  • Needle (if your cord is not stiff)
  1. Step 1

Tie a knot 6 inches from one end of your cord and put 10 beads for the Hail Mary up to the knot; tie a knot near the 10th bead, leaving a little room for the beads to slide. Put one bead for the Our Father; tie another knot leaving some wiggle room. Repeat these steps until you have five sets of 10 beads---do not add the fifth Our Father bead at this time.

  2. Step 2

Tie a knot at the end. Now tie both ends together. You'll have a circle with your beads. Add the clear nail polish or craft glue so the knot won't come undone. Allow it to dry.

  3. Step 3

String one Our Father bead onto the longer cord. Tie a knot after this bead; add three beads for the Hail Mary. Tie another knot and slide on the last bead for the Our Father. Tie another knot.

  4. Step 4

Put the crucifix on the cord and secure it with a double knot. Dab on the craft glue or nail polish. (See Resources.)

  5. Step 5

Allow the nail polish or glue to cry completely. Carefully cut the excess ends of cord. Ask your parish priest to bless your homemade rosary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the holes for all of your beads are the same size and that the cord will slide easily through. Since this rosary is for children, choose colorful beads that will be able to withstand childish play.
  • Do not allow young children to get the beads since they can choke on the beads.
