Clothes are the most popular donated item, but they are not the only things you can donate. You can also donate any unwanted used furniture. This will help someone less fortunate out and at the same time give you a nice tax deduction. Some organizations will even arrange to pick up the used furniture if you can't transport it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Help1up's furniture bank locater (see Resources). Type in your zip code and the donation facility closest to you will pop up. Click on its link to get the details. These details include hours of operation and whether or not they will pick up the donated furniture. All of the facilities will issue you a receipt that you can use for your taxes.

Search ReDo (see Resources). ReDo is another source that connects you with a donation facility in your area. The homepage has a drop down menu where you will need to choose your state. You can then sort through the list of facilities in your state. Each one has contact information as well as the warehouse's size. Each of these facilities will also provide you with a receipt for your taxes.

Contact the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army will arrange to pick up large furniture items, but not small ones. They give you receipts for your taxes, however, no matter the size of your donation.

Take your used furniture to your local thrift shop. You may want to call first to get the donation hours. You can just drop the furniture off if you don't need a receipt for your taxes.

    • 5

Consider donating to Goodwill (see Resources to locate a facility near you). Your search results will give you addresses and phone numbers that you can use to find out hours of operation and whether or not they will pick up the furniture for you.

Use a website called FreeSharing (see Resources). This website is full of individuals who share what they don't want with others for free. This way, they can take what they need from others and give others what they don't need. It saves money and allows them to spend their hard-earned money on things like food and health insurance. You won't get a receipt for your taxes, but you be helping people in your area get the furniture they need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the furniture you donate is furniture that others would want to use. In other words, if the furniture is damaged or broken, don't donate it.
