Tinted taillights are a popular modification that car enthusiasts perform on their cars of choice. The Honda Civic is no different and has one of the largest and most diverse fan bases of any model car nationwide. One particularly attractive thing about the Honda Civic is the availability of aftermarket parts at reasonable prices. You can purchase pre-tinted taillights that mount directly into the trunk lid. However it is more economical to tint your own tail lights. With today's easy to use tinting products, there is no reason that you should not be able to tint your taillights and make them look sleek and professional. Follow these simple steps to get started today.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pop the trunk and raise the trunk lid. Pull the carpet back away from the trunk compartment to expose the back of the rear taillight assemblies. Unplug the light from the wiring harness and turn the light bulb counter clockwise to release it from the light assembly. Use the screwdriver to unbolt the taillight assembly from the trunk and pull the taillight lens straight out of the hole.

  2. Step 2

Repeat Step 1 for the other tail light and then lay the lights down on a soft surface. Use the masking tape to tape a circle around the area where the tail light bulb will rest when mounted (do this to avoid being pulled over). Use the sandpaper to lightly buff all around the circular area. This will help the paint stick better. Spray the Nightshades tinting paint on both taped lights.

  3. Step 3

Spray 8 to 15 light coats (allowing 30 minutes between coats to dry) of the tinting on the lights and then allow them to dry completely.

  4. Step 4

Spray 3 to 5 coats of clear coat on the tinting to keep the paint from scratching. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes between each coat. Wait 24 hours and then pull the tape off.

  5. Step 5

Mount the tail lights back into the trunk by reversing Steps 1-2 and then hook the lights and wiring harness back up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use paint thinner applied directly to the painted surface to clean up blemished paint.
  • Spray several light coats versus one thick coat as this paint is very thin and can easily run, giving you a wasted paint job.
