We currently rely on fossil fuels as our number one source of energy. As fuel prices continue to skyrocket and as the supply of fossil fuels continues to diminish, a renewable and alternative energy industry has entered the marketplace. This field is still being established. However, if you are interested in working in the alternative energy industry, you can follow the steps below to get your foot in the door.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about alternative energy. Alternative energy is a term that refers to a variety of usable energy sources that are intended to replace fuel sources but do not have the negative consequences associated with the fuels they aim to replace.

  2. Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the sectors related to the alternative energy industry. This list will include solar energy, wind power, geothermal, biofuel, biodiesel, hydrogen and a myriad of other forms of renewable energy sources.

  3. Step 3

Choose a sector that you are interested in and start looking for employment opportunities within this sector. Because this field is a new one, there are many opportunities for those who wish to invest in the industry as well as those who wish to become involved in development. Engineers and scientists are needed to help the field expand and grow.

  4. Step 4

Become involved in Green organizations and Alternative Energy activism. While these types of groups can offer employment opportunities only to those who are interested in lobbying, activism and organizing, they can offer networking opportunities to those interested in finding work in the field of alternative energy.

  5. Step 5

Consider the global market rather than just the national one. The dwindling supply of fossil fuels on our planet is not only a national issue--it is a worldwide one. If you cannot find employment within a sector of the industry in the United States, perhaps there may be something more fitting available abroad.
