How to Change an Address for Social Security Disability Checks

Social Security disability checks are important to people that are disabled. Social Security and Social Security Income checks are in the mail on the first of each month. However, since they are government checks, if you move they cannot be forwarded to your new address. According to Social Security Administration, if you are on SSI you only have 10 days after the first of the month to file a change of address. For regular Social Security, you do not have a time limit.

Change your address online. If you receive a Social Security disability check, you can answer a series of questions. Log on to the SSA website. Click the "What You Can Do Online" link, then select the "If You Get Benefits" tab. Scroll down to "Change Your Address or Telephone Number." Select the "Change My Address Without Using a Social Security Password." Read and click "OK" on the next page. Fill out questions about your current SS benefits. This does not apply to individuals on SSI.

File an address change with a Social Security password. With a password, you can file online without answering any questions. You need to apply for this password by calling (800) 772-1213 or use the online form. After you answer the questions accurately, you will receive a password in the mail. You can change your address online anytime without resubmitting the required answers. This is also not applicable for SSI members.

Contact the Social Security Administration. You can call the main office at (800) 772-1213 or for the hearing-impaired (800) 325-0778. Ask the SSA to change your address. In addition, you can contact your local office. The SSA website has a search feature for your zip code. Enter your zip and receive office locations near you. Contacting the Social Security Administration by phone is available for Social Security as well as SSI members.

Tips & Warnings

  • People on Social Security Income cannot change an address online. Every time you ask for a change of address, you need to fill out a new form about living arrangements.

  • If you do not change your address when you move, there could be a delay in receiving your Social Security disability check.
