Cast on your stitches. On a size 5 circular knitting needle, cast on at least 20 stitches. To do this, take the yarn ball and pull out one end. Grab the yarn with your palm facing away from you. Twist the yarn, grasping it between your thumb and finger, so that your palm is facing you. Stick the end of your knitting needle into the hole you have created with the yarn. You have just cast on one stitch. Repeat this process for the remaining 19 stitches.

Knit around the circular needles. Make sure that the yarn is facing the same way when you knit your first row. To knit, push all of the stitches around until they are all contained on the left side and the left needle. Slip the right needle into the first stitch, holding the two needles side by side. Wrap the loose yarn string around the right needle, pulling it towards you. Slip the right needle down, pulling the new yarn string in onto the right needle. this will cause the old stitch to be replaced by a new one. Continue to knit all of your stitches until the entire scarf reaches the desired length, usually around four feet.

Cast off your stitches. Once your scarf is the length that you want, begin to cast off the stitches. To do this, knit one stitch onto the right needle, then slip the next stitch onto the same needle. Using your left needle, flip the second stitch over the top of the first one, bringing the first stitch back onto the left needle. You have just cast off one stitch. Repeat this step until all of the stitches are cast off.
