Bamboo is a fast-growing outdoor plant. With proper maintenance and care, bamboo can be a manageable potted indoor plant. Indoor bamboo plants are becoming more common, partly due to the superstition that it brings good fortune. Whether you believe in the luck of the bamboo or not, an indoor bamboo plant is a beautiful, hardy and exotic plant to add to any home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Container
  • Water
  • Soil
  • Fertilizers
  • Clippers
  • Light
  1. Step 1

Choose a container that is about the length of your bamboo's roots and is at least as wide as it is tall. Once you put your bamboo's root ball in the container, you should have at least two inches on all sides to allow for ample growth.

  2. Step 2

Plant your bamboo in soil. Choose a container that has holes on the bottom and fill with a well draining soil. Plant your bamboo about 2 inches deep into the soil.

  3. Step 3

Keep the soil moist at all times. It should not be over watered or allowed to dry out. You can also occasionally mist your bamboo plants with a spray bottle, especially in dry atmospheres.

  4. Step 4

Keep your bamboo plant in a sunny or partially sunny spot in your home. You can also provide supplemental lighting by placing the bamboo near another source of light such as a fluorescent lamp or plant light.

  5. Step 5

Fertilize your bamboo plant with a general purpose or high nitrogen fertilizer, if it is planted in soil. Follow the manufacturer's directions since fertilizers come in different strengths and release rates. Usually you will need to fertilize monthly.

  6. Step 6

Prune your bamboo plant. Cutting back your bamboo will not hurt it. Trim it to keep it short and trim to keep it from getting too wide. Also, you can trim your bamboo for decorative purposes by varying the sizes and keeping the shoots to a minimum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a tropical type of bamboo. They adjust to the home's temperatures better than other varieties. You can mix some peat moss in with your soil to allow for better water drainage.
