Stained grout is not only unattractive, but it also undercuts the hard work you put in installing and grouting your tile floor. Sealing your grout takes a little time but is well worth it in the long run.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roll-On Grout Sealer
  1. Step 1

You would typically buy grout sealer at the same time as you buy grout. If not, go back to your local home improvement center and purchase enough sealer for the floor space, including the tile that will be beneath your base cabinet.

  2. Step 2

Once your grout has set, at least overnight if not 48 hours, it's time to get out the grout sealer. Simply use the attached roller wheel to roll the sealer over the grout lines, according to manufacturer's instructions. Roll the sealer over the entire floor area, especially beneath the base cabinet. Sometimes two coats are necessary.

  3. Step 3

Most manufacturers will tell you to let the grout cure for at least a week. If you are on a time limit for installing base cabinetry, it is still best to wait two or three days before installing to prevent damage during installation from dirty shoes and tools.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to factor in the drying times before you begin a remodel, so you aren't pressed for time once the grout sealer is applied.
  • Since grout is porous, if you do not seal the grout beneath your base cabinets and one day decide to remove them during a remodel, you might find that the now-exposed grout didn't hold up and you'll either have to alter your remodeling plans and/or regrout. If you installed a natural stone or other non-glazed tile, you must seal these before applying grout sealer (theoretically, before installing them or at least before grouting) to prevent a permanent haze from ruining your beautiful tile work.
