The Microsoft Works software is a word-processing program similar to the more-popular Microsoft Word. From time to time, Microsoft releases updates to the program that fix bugs they have found or offer new functionality. If you use the Windows ME operating system, you can download the updates directly from Microsoft's official website.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the Microsoft Works program either by double-clicking the desktop icon or by clicking the name of the program in the Programs menu listed in the Start toolbar. Wait for the program to load. Click "Help" at the top of the screen. Click "About Microsoft Works" from the drop-down menu that will appear. Check the top area of the new window that will pop up to find the version of Microsoft Works you are using. Note the version information.

    Open the web browser you use by double-clicking on its corresponding desktop icon. Navigate your browser to the official Microsoft works web page and then click "Product Upgrades and Downloads" (see Resources below). Scroll down the page until you see "Updates and Downloads."

  3. Step 3

    Click "Works Update." You'll see a display of the Microsoft Works you are using. Click "Download Works Update," once the new page has loaded.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Download" to initiate download. Click "Save File" when your web browser opens a new window asking if you want to authorize the download. Close the Microsoft Works program and open the folder where your downloaded files are saved.

  5. Step 5

    Double click the file you downloaded. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update's installation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make copies of any important Microsoft Works documents you have saved before installing the update.
  • If Microsoft Works is open when you first run the update file, it will not install properly.
