Instructions

Hot water opens up the hair follicle to help begin the fading process, so using the hottest water you can tolerate, lather your hair with dandruff shampoo and rinse. The ingredients in dandruff shampoo can help strip out the remaining hair dye since nonpermanent hair color doesn't contain the harsh chemicals that permanent dye does--the color is closer to the hair surface.

Apply a conditioner to your hair, leave it for three minutes and rinse out. Because you are trying to strip out the hair color, you also are stripping out moisture as well, so this is important in preventing damage to your hair.

    • 3

Go to a local drugstore and buy a hair hot oil treatment, such as VO5 or Pantene brands. Following the manufacturer's directions, apply the hot oil treatment and leave on for the recommended time before rinsing out. Once again, this helps open the hair follicles so you can more easily scrub the hair color out.

Shampoo with the dandruff shampoo again after you rinse out the hot oil treatment. Since you've opened the hair follicle, the dandruff shampoo can penetrate the nonpermanent hair color and make it fade.

Continue to repeat the above fading process for three or four days. If you still don't see any results, contact a professional hairdresser who can safely strip the leftover hair color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use these tips for permanent hair color; the chemical compounds in permanent hair color are much stronger and you may end up getting no results and damaging your hair. Carefully read the directions on the nonpermanent hair color box; some shades are not recommended for certain natural hair colors and could alter your hair color long after the anticipated fading period.
