Things You'll Need:
- A Kentucky Derby program listing all the horses in the race.
- At least $30 to make your bets.
- A pen to circle the horses you need to bet on.
-
Step 1
You must be at a legal betting facility to bet on the Kentucky Derby. If you are not close to a facility, you may have to establish an on line betting account with Churchill Downs race track. The 2009 Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday, May 2nd.
-
Step 2
You will need to have a racing program for the Kentucky Derby. These are readily available at all betting facilities as you enter the door. The Kentucky Derby will be run late in the day and the race will be listed near the end of the program.
-
Step 3
You will need to watch the odds board before the Kentucky Derby race is run and circle all the horses at 15 to 1 odds and/or higher. Don't leave any horse out even if it is at very high odds, like 99 to 1. If you don't understand the odds board, ask any silver haired guy in the crowd. He should know, but don't let him tell you how to bet.
-
Step 4
About 10 minutes before the race is run, you need to go to a betting window and say, "Churchill Downs", "Two Dollars" to "Win" on number (give the teller all your selection numbers starting with the lowest number and finishing with the highest number). You may have as many as 15 horses or numbers to bet on. The cost will be $30 for 15 bets.
-
Step 5
Go to a location where you can watch the race. If one of your horses wins the race, head back to the teller window and wait until the race is declared Official. Give the teller your ticket with the winning number on it and collect your winnings. Celebrate if you won big.

on 5/5/2009 WOW, was that a Kentucky Derby or what? Mine That Bird won and paid $103. This horse was one that I bet, but it was certainly off my radar. Calvin Borel is the best mud jockey in the country and he proved it by winning both the Derby and the Oaks. It was the second biggest long shot in the history of the Derby. I hope you followed my advice and had a couple of bucks on it. There were 153,563 fans at Churchill and there was a total of $104,563,501 bet on the Kentucky Derby race alone. This betting system won't work every year, but when there is no stand out horse, anything can happen. Keep a check on my articles about the Preakness and the Belmont races soon to come. on 4/30/2009 The final drawing for all Kentucky Derby Horses is now complete. Post positions and odds have been assigned. Quality Road was scratched due to hoof problems, so I Want Revenge is the lone favorite, with Dunkirk, Pioneer of the Nile and Friesen Fire nearly tied for the second favorite. That leaves 16 horses that will most likely go off at 15-1 or higher. This race is wide open and any horse in it might win. I will definitely be betting a couple of bucks on every horse over 15-1 odds. I look for a big upset in this race. I especially like Desert Party, General Quarters, Chocolate Candy, Papa Clem, Regal Ransom and Join in the Dance. It will be a great race. Longshotbettor

on 4/23/2009 Baring some last minute changes, the Kentucky Derby field of 20 horses is now set. I Want Revenge and Quality Road should be the favorites, with Dunkirk, Friesan Fire and Pioneer of the Nile at medium odds. That leaves 15 horses that most likely will be at 15-1 or higher odds. Several of those horses have a good chance of pulling off an upset. The only way to make sure you have a winning ticket on the long shots is to have a "Win" ticket on all 15 horses. This race is far too complicated and unpredictable to try and pick a single long shot, so you must bet them all. A $30 bet is a fair price to pay just to watch the race, win or lose. Check back here next week for my predictions. Longshotbettor

on 4/20/2009 4/20/09 It is crunch time for all those trainers and owners who want a shot at winning this year's Kentucky Derby. With less than two weeks to go before the big race, a decision must be made soon to run or not. It appears to me that the race will have several horses that will go off at high odds. A few of the top horses may decide not to run and this would allow horses like Summer Bird, El Crespo, Take the Points, Atomic Rain or Just a Coincidence to get in unexpectedly. I am looking for a big pay off when one of these little known horses win. Stay tuned. Longshotbettor
