Baby food jars make a perfect container for candles both decorative and for emergency use. Because baby food jars are made from heat-tempered glass, the heat of the candle will not cause the jars to break or crack. You can make baby food jar candles in an afternoon and have them ready for use anytime you need them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set the open baby food jars on several layers of newspaper to protect the counter or table from accidental wax spills.

  2. Step 2

Cut the piece of candlewick 2 inches longer than the height of the baby food jar.

  3. Step 3

Wrap one end of the cut candlewick around the center of a toothpick.

  4. Step 4

Place the wick in the center of the baby food jar, letting the toothpick hold the wick in place across the top of the jar.

  5. Step 5

Fill a large saucepan 3/4 full of water and bring to a slow boil.

  6. Step 6

Place a stick of paraffin in a plastic freezer bag and seal the bag shut.

  7. Step 7

Place the freezer bag into the simmering water and let the paraffin melt. Let the top of the freezer bag hang over the top of the pot.

  8. Step 8

Lift the bag from the water and open a small section of the top of the bag.

  9. Step 9

Pour the melted paraffin into the baby food jars.

  10. Step 10

Allow the paraffin to harden for several hours, or overnight, before using the candle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Scents can be added to the freezer bag before the paraffin is added. As the paraffin melts, the scent will blend with the wax. Candle dyes can be added to the bag as the paraffin melts. You can use food coloring or liquid dyes to give your candles color. Simply swish the bag contents to evenly distribute the color before pouring.
